Our Take on the Pottery Barn Exeter Mason Jar Chanderlier

this is the one from pottery barn
I mean you can see why I was in LOVE?
Yup, it was LOVE at first sight. The Pottery Barn Exeter Mason Chandlier. Priced at $399.99 U.S. I completely fell obsessed with this light when I seen it. It was a MUST HAVE on my list.. It would go perfect with our new decor and our gorgeous new Benchwright Pottery Barn Dining Set. So of course me being the budget queen, I was on the hunt to find one cheaper? Was it possible? Probably not.. but I was gonna find it... well after a month or so..  no luck. We went to order it on the PB website to only find out that you can't get it in Canada :( Booo :( I was devasted. But then, luck changed! Pottery Barn announced that they will be shipping internationally~ YAY!!! So the DAY of the big change I got online and went to order it.. .are you ready? I went to check out and I could NOT believe my eyes... $508.00 CAD.. PLUS TAX, SHIPPING AND DUTY! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? I honestly could not get over it... Here we are with a stronger dollar and the mark up on this crap was UNREAL. It came to $618.32 CAD. There was obviously NO way this was happening. Sooo Ross and I put our heads together lol and came up with our OWN plan. We were gonna make it. I was lucky enough to find a lady out in Waterloo, ON that had 12 Mason Jars with the original lids, that were 35yrs old. My friend Brian was nice enough to have his company Mackinnon Metals make our metal piece that we sized out and designed - TY, Brian! and then everything else was at the local Depot :) .. we painted the metal piece to our desired colour and put this all together.... all I have to say is WOW! I could not be ay happier! This piece came out 100 x better than I thought it would and we are sooooo glad we did not buy it from Pottery Barn! It looks so much nicer, its handmade BY US and it's our pride and joy now :D haha... Im in LOVE. Check it out for yourself :) Oh and guess how much it cost us? to the dime? $ 134.75 CANADIAN HANDMADE Baby! haha...

Pottery Barn Knock Offs :)

So the other project that took a lot of time, but once it's set up in the living room it is gonna be well worth the wait! is our coffee table and end table :) The same guy that we bought the Desk and a few other things from also had a ton of wood laying around his barn that he wanted to get rid of so for 80$ we bought 5 pc from him....

Wait and see what the outcome was.. a whole lot of cutting and sanding, then some stain and polyurethane and WOW these tables look like they are right out of pottery barn's store! Im so glad we did this and not forked out 1500$ for the ones we wanted! these are great, the best part about it.. the wood that we used to build it is 150 years old so it has a lot of character to it and that's what I love most! :) Say tuned for after photos :) All together we spent 220$ on both the coffee and end table together.

finished coffee table! from the above barn wood! :) end table behind it! its a piece that you just have to see in person

95 year old Oak Desk

the original wood was nice then they painted an awful colour on it.. this is what we found..

its gonna be a beauty!

One of our first projects that I'm really excited to share is this beautiful "typewriter desk" from 1916 (I thought it was around 1930 but I found an engraving in the desk that says est 1885 made 1916) I found a man out in Flamborough, ON who bought a piece of property with an old barn and he had a treasure of things :) crazy guy wanted to sell it all! I say crazy bc I would have been in my glory to have it all lol anyways I was there to buy an old white window frame from him (will post that in a few weeks when I'm done) but as I walked through his barn I noticed this desk in the corner just covered with wood and a bunch of other things. So I quickly took a peek and instantly fell in love. My first thought was "wow it's kinda big and bulky" but there I scratched through the paint and seen the wood. That was it! I had to have it! I offered him 50$ and that was it :) so over the last three weeks, the stripping and sanding has been hell but my god is it gonna look amazing! Picked out the stain last week and got the drawers done! This project should be completeled within the next two weeks & all together we spent 115$ on it :) can't wait to share the final outcome.

What was underneath the stripping & sanding...

The Stain! :)
This is the middle piece stained...

The Drawers.. stained ... No intensions on doing the whole thing! Its already wayy to much to sand/strip/stain lol

Shot of the one info piece I found.. the other one has the date it was made
The front of the first stained drawer
Stain has been done three times, now its time for the satin finish :)
the satin finish
drawer one drying
its turning out just as I pictured! The centre of the desk drying after satin finish

desk with two coats on stain, still one more to go and a layer or three of satin finish!

so I decided to keep the original handles as is. but after staining and finishing the drawers and I held them up to it I wasn't too pleased.. so THANK GOD for good ole'rust oleum, a little bit of spraying and they now look amazing! so still the original handles, just an update :).. wait until you see what I have to match them ;)

so this is another shot kinda up close of the original handle

handles painted ~
hard to tell in the pics but they look much better and in person :)
again
The desk should be done by this week.. just a few more coats and its set up time! :) yay!
